Back in the early 2000s, Dessert Beauty by Jessica Simpson was one of the first beauty brands to make fragrance edible-yes, edible. This nostalgic beauty line mixed with sugary-sweet scents with sexy Y2K packaging, making it a cult favorite among teens and beauty lovers. Today we’re diving into its short-lived rise, why it disappeared, and the best modern dupes you can still shop. When I tell you I love Jessica Simpson, this is the time period that I am talking about. The 2000s were a time of pop star girlies, pink and all things feminine.
I was 10 years old when Jessica Simpson first came out on the music scene. She was about 17 or 18 years old, so to those of us Millennials who remember her from this time, she was like a cool big sister. She was so effortlessly beautiful, sweet and down to earth. This was part of her “girl next door” appeal. A lot has happened since her early career, but I do believe she is making a slow comeback to music on her own terms. In this blog post, I will be going over her beauty brand, Dessert Beauty by Jessica Simpson, and give you a few dupe suggestions that are similar to her products.

Jessica Simpson
Jessica is from Albilene, Texas where she and her sister Ashlee Simpson grew up together. She actually dropped out of high school to start her music career, and her parents focused on her career to pursue her dreams. Columbia Records signed her when she was 17 and she later came out with her album, “Sweet Kisses”. “I Wanna Love You Forever” is one of her most watched music videos on YouTube and one of my favorite songs by her. I went ahead and posted it here to give you an idea of what she was like and a taste of her music.
Not long after she dropped this album, she started to date Nick Lachey. He is the lead singer from the 90s boy band, 98 degrees. Being so young, I didn’t really see the appeal of Nick then and to be honest, I don’t see it now either. LOL! He was a heartthrob to many, and they made a cute couple. I will give Nick credit where it’s due though. He was very supportive of her Dessert Beauty launch. I don’t know if he was there for every event, but the Getty Images show him at 2 or 3 events at least. He doesn’t look bored, he’s smiling and overall hyping her up. I love that.

Dessert Beauty Ads
I found a few ads online to give you an idea of how these were sold to us. Pink, girly, fluffy powder puffs and sweet tasting products. The cursive font is very 2000s coded. I’m not really a fan of it, but I’m not the one with the marketing degree. It obviously worked really well, and a lot of people liked this brand. Dessert Beauty was sold in Walgreens, Brooks, Eckerd, Longs Drugs, Claire’s, Ulta and Sephora.
A Little Controversy
An issue that some people had with this brand being sold in Claire’s, is that it is a beauty store for little girls. I got my ears pierced there when I was in 3rd grade to give you an idea. This was not an ideal age group to sell to because of the way the brand was being advertised. Being that Jessica Simpson is a grown woman, and let’s face it, a sex icon, she’s going to sell it just like that. Sexy. Even her husband Nick can be seen licking body butter/lotion off of her at an event. There’s nothing wrong with that by itself for adults, but definitely not for kids.
When I look at these ads, knowing that they were sold at Ulta and Sephora, all I could think of is how they would sell today. With Tik Tok and social media being a huge part of our everyday lives, I think she would have done even better. By better I mean, longevity-wise. I really think she could have had real staying power with this brand. Unfortunately, Jessica Simpson was just the face of the brand and was not an owner.
Legal Drama Behind Dessert Beauty
Lawsuit from Cosmojet
Despite the popularity of Dessert Beauty by Jessica Simpson, the brand’s production and marketing faced backlash. Cosmojet was the company that was in charge of creating the products and bottles for Dessert Beauty by Jessica Simpson. Out of the $1,000,000 in profits, only $800,000 had been paid to Cosmojet. I’m not sure if they tried to sue Jessica Simpson, since she was just the face of the brand, but they did successfully sue the company that did own Dessert Beauty. Always pay your people!!
Lawsuit from Mara Fox
There was also another lawsuit from a woman named Mara Fox who claimed their product name “Love Potion” was stolen from her and claimed it made her lose business due to customer’s confusion. She tried to sue Jessica Simpson, Randi Shinder, and Sephora Cosmetics. Unfortunately, Fox didn’t have the money to take them to court, so the lawsuit failed.

Mara Fox is the former guitarist for the all-female, 80s rock/heavy metal band Precious Metal. Mara Fox has owned and maintained the Love Potion Perfume registered trademark since 1995, and the trademark has attained incontestable status since the year 2000. Fox has had uninterrupted sales of her product since 1989 via a retail location she operated in Venice Beach, California with retail locations around the country. Her website is www.LovePotionPerfume.com. Her vibes are very witchy and spiritual, so if you want to check her out, you should! Love Potion Copyright Infringement
The main issue was copyright infringement with the naming of Dessert Beauty’s products. Fox decided to sue Randi Shinder, the “Clean” Perfume creator and Dessert Beauty founder along with business partners, Jessica Simpson and Sephora Cosmetics, alleging the trademark infringement regarding Dessert Beauty’s use of the name “Love Potion” and for at least two of Dessert’s products, fully named “Jessica Simpson’s Deliciously Kissable Love Potion Fragrance”, and “Jessica Simpson’s Belly Button Love Potion”, but more often referred to in their press releases, promotional material, and advertising as simply “Love Potion Fragrance”, “Dessert Love Potion” and “Belly Button Love Potion”.
This seems silly, but when you think about the SEO of websites and customer’s searching for products, the most viewed website is going to show at the top of the search results. This is also why you see really long and detailed skincare and beauty products when you’re buying a product from a website etc.
With the bad press from these two lawsuits, unfortunately, Dessert Beauty, Dessert Treats and Sweet Kisses were taken off the market. I did find a few bottles of this and that on eBay if you’re really curious. Just remember, those products are at least 19 years old and very expired. Buy at your own risk.
Why Dessert Beauty by Jessica Simpson Was So Iconic
The first two photos are from the from Dessert Beauty launch. Look at Nick being so supportive. (I told you!) I’m not a big fan of this dress, but the shawl is so pretty! Real or not, I love the color, and it looks so soft and luxurious. Very Hollywood. The second set of pictures are from an event that took place at a mall. I’m not sure if it was close to or next to a Ulta or a Sephora, but the other pictures I saw made it look like the meet and greet was near the food court or the first level of the mall. Very cute outfit. I love the plaid. The third set of photos are from the Dessert Beauty “Treats” line. I don’t love her hair here, but gosh, does she ever take a bad picture?
I found a few pictures of the products up close to give you an idea of what the beauty line looked like brand new. There isn’t really a list out there anywhere that says what the products were but from the pictures I can guess there was fragrances, lotion, lip gloss, whipped body butter and one of them is a powder with a powder puff. The product that sort of looks like whipped cream, is a whipped cream product, but I’m not sure what for. Maybe it’s a lotion? Dessert Beauty Event Catering
Having been to many influencer and beauty events, food is actually pretty important. In this case, there was “real food” as I like to call it. Food that would actually make you full and be good for you. The other table is on brand with the products. I see soda, lollipops, gumballs, cupcakes and maybe cotton candy. This part of the event, from personal experience, is a little boring. It’s good to make the most of it! Small chat with other people in the industry is important for business. It also helps make the event more fun. I say this as an introvert, it’s important to get out and socialize sometimes.
I also think it’s interesting that Jamie McCarthy and M. Von Holden, the photographers of these pictures, decided to take behind the scenes photos. It’s an interesting perspective to see all this media and cameras on the other side of Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. You see the perspective of the famous people and the other people there, just doing their jobs.
Dessert Beauty Product Lines
With the success of Dessert Beauty came other lines for a total of three collections. The first being the “Dessert Beauty Collection”, pictured in the first picture below. The second was “Dessert Treats Collection” and the third being “Sweet Kisses Collection”. I couldn’t find any pictures of the “Sweet Kisses Collection” so I’m not sure what it looks like other than a few products here and there. It’s looks to be much of the same products, just different scents and the packaging is yellow. I’m not sure what these products were originally priced at, but on eBay they can be pretty expensive.
Dessert Beauty Perfumes
Some of the fragrances that were in the Dessert Beauty brand were Dreamy Kissable, Candy, Country Peach, Creme Brulee, Cupcake, Hula Girl, Juicy, Strawberry Sorbet, Sweet Kisses, Taste and Vanilla Ice Cream. I don’t know about you but Country Peach, Strawberry Sorbet and Vanilla Ice Cream sound amazing! These were all the fragrances I could find, so if there are more, please let me know.
