The Origins of Ayurvedic Skincare
Ayurveda, which means “the science of life,” dates back over 5,000 years in India. Skincare in Ayurveda focused on natural oils, herbs, and botanical extracts to protect the skin, treat conditions, and support overall well-being. Ancient texts reference the use of turmeric, aloe vera, and neem for their cleansing, healing, and protective properties. Royals and elites often used specialized Ayurvedic routines for their daily grooming, reflecting both cultural and medicinal significance.
Ayurvedic Skincare Among Indian Elites
Historically, Ayurvedic skincare was not only a common practice but also a marker of refinement among Indian royalty and elites. Maharajas and their courts often employed Ayurvedic physicians to craft personalized skincare regimens, using ingredients like turmeric, sandalwood, and aloe vera to maintain youthful, glowing skin. Queens and princesses would incorporate these treatments into daily rituals, emphasizing not just aesthetic benefits but also skin health and balance according to their doshas.
Even prominent historical figures, such as Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and other royal women in the Mughal courts, were known to favor Ayurvedic formulations as part of their beauty routines. These regimens often combined gentle cleansers made from herbal pastes, nourishing oils, and protective sunscreens derived from natural ingredients—all designed to work in harmony with the wearer’s constitution and environment.
Ayurvedic skincare’s influence extended beyond the palace walls. Merchants and wealthy families would adopt scaled-down versions of these royal rituals, emphasizing preventive care, natural ingredients, and daily maintenance. Over time, the principles of Ayurvedic skincare became more accessible, eventually inspiring contemporary wellness and beauty brands that continue to draw on these centuries-old traditions.
Rani Lakshmibai and the Beauty of Ayurvedic Traditions
Rani Lakshmibai, the legendary Queen of Jhansi, is celebrated not only for her courage but also for her grace and poise. While there are no definitive records of her personal skincare routine, historical texts and folklore suggest that Indian royalty often turned to Ayurvedic practices to maintain radiant skin. It is believed that she may have used turmeric pastes for brightening and healing the skin, sandalwood to calm and refresh the complexion, and rosewater as a natural toner.
Royal women of her era also relied on herbal oils, like saffron-infused ghee or almond oil, to nourish the skin and protect it from harsh sun and dust. These rituals were more than beauty routines—they were deeply tied to wellness, balancing the mind, body, and spirit. Even if the exact products Rani Lakshmibai used remain a matter of legend, her story exemplifies the elegance and holistic philosophy of Ayurvedic skincare that continues to inspire practices today.

The Three Doshas and Ayurvedic Skincare
Ayurvedic philosophy identifies three primary doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha represents different body and skin types, and balancing them is key to effective skincare.
Vata Skin: Typically dry, sensitive, and prone to early aging. Ayurvedic skincare emphasizes gentle hydration, nourishing oils, and calming herbs.
Pitta Skin: Often prone to redness, inflammation, or sensitivity. Cooling ingredients like aloe, sandalwood, and turmeric help soothe irritation.
Kapha Skin: Characterized by oiliness or congestion. Ayurvedic skincare uses light, clarifying ingredients to balance excess sebum and prevent breakouts.

Awesome!
Believe it or not, I’ve never had a skincare routine, mostly because it seemed too complicated and time-consuming and I had no idea what to use. This post does a great job breaking it all down. Thank you for this great info!
Simple is best. Even just a cleanser, moisturizer and spf will work. Anything else is used for specific things, like pigmentation or acne. Don’t let it intimidate you, you can do it! <3
This set looks great! I love the amount of actives they used while still keeping focused on skincare goals. I have never tried anything with witch hazel before. Might have to change that😉
