A Kitchen Witch’s Guide to Oranges
If you’re a kitchen witch at heart—someone who finds magic in the herbs, fruits like oranges, and potions of everyday life—then your skincare routine can become just as enchanting as your moon rituals and herbal brews. In this ritual-rich post, we’re blending modern rituals with old-world citrus magic through a daily dose of radiance, confidence, and solar enchantment.

The Magical History of Oranges in Witchcraft
Before we even dive into skincare rituals, let’s honor the ancient magic of citrus—particularly oranges, a fruit long associated with the Sun, abundance, joy, and purification. If you need an example on how to get started, one of my favorite YouTube channels to watch is called “The Green Witch”. Not only is her voice so soothing, but her visuals and “how tos” in witchcraft are very thoughtful and easy to watch, especially if you are a beginner.
This is her take on how to do a “Winter Solstice Prosperity” spell. You can take this as inspiration and do your rituals in a way you are comfortable with in your own practice. If you are on a budget, use what you have around the house. It’s all about your intentions.
Oranges in Mythology: Gaia, Enlil, and the Magic of Fertility
Oranges have a long history of spiritual meaning across cultures, especially when it comes to fertility, abundance, and the sacred balance between earth and air. Their round, glowing shape closely resembles the earth itself-a symbol of wholeness and divine cycles of life. In Greek mythology, this globe-like form naturally ties to Gaia, the goddess of fertility and the nourishing mother of all life. Just like Gaia, oranges grow from the earth and offer sweetness, vitality, and renewal. They’re also deeply connected to solar energy and the feminine force of creation, making them a beautiful symbol in fertility rituals or earth-based spiritual practices.
Alternatively, in ancient Sumerian belief, the god Enlil-known as the god of earth, wind, and air-was associated with the breath of life and the fertility of the land. Oranges, with their bright skin, fragrant scent, and ability to grow in warm, airy climates, seem to embody both Gaia’s grounding energy and Enlil’s celestial breath. It’s possible their perfectly rounded shape contributed to this symbolism-a visual echo of the Earth, the sun, and the womb. Whether used in seasonal altar offerings, abundance spells, or simply enjoyed mindfully, oranges remind us of the harmony between the elements and the divine support that surrounds growth, creativity, and new beginnings.
Citrus as Solar Magic
In folk magic, oranges and other citrus fruits have been considered sacred to the Sun due to their vibrant color, uplifting scent, and energizing properties.
They were often used in rituals to:
- Attract abundance and wealth
- Cleanse negative energy or stagnant chi
- Draw love, vitality, and joy
- Bless homes with luck and prosperity
Ancient Mediterranean cultures viewed oranges as symbols of divine light, and their blossoms were used in wedding ceremonies to promote fertility and future happiness. In Hoodoo, orange peels are placed in sachets or sprinkled in bathwater for prosperity, and dried oranges are often hung in the home or added to spells for success and strength.
In kitchen witchery, the act of slicing citrus releases both scent and spirit—a sensory way to invite brightness, both literal and energetic, into your life. The sharp aroma of an orange peel is believed to cut through depression, mental fog, and spiritual heaviness.
Dried Oranges in Magic
Dried orange slices have long been used in:
- Altar decor for sabbats like Litha and Yule, symbolizing the returning or sustaining of the Sun’s power
- Wreaths and garlands to bless the home with solar energy and protection
- Prosperity sachets, paired with cinnamon, clove, or bay leaf
- Infused oils or potpourri blends for happiness, love, and creativity
Their round, golden shape represents wholeness and the Wheel of the Year, making them a beautiful magical symbol of cycles, light, and growth. Kitchen witches often save orange peels, dry them on the windowsill, and grind them into powder for use in bath salts, cleansing floor washes, or candle magic.
Winter Solstice: The Turning of Light and a Time for Radiance
As the darkest night of the year approaches, we enter the sacred portal of the Winter Solstice-a time when the Sunn pauses, the Earth hushes, and new light is born. It’s a moment of reflection, intention, and rebirth-a cosmic invitation to honor what has been and call in what we desire. For the Kitchen Witch, this is not just a date on the calendar-it’s a seasonal spell in motion. And what better fruit to work with during this solar rebirth than the orange, the glowing orb of sun magic? Oranges, with their brilliant color and invigorating scent, are like little suns in your hands-perfect for Solstice rituals focused on prosperity, joy, and personal glow.
