You may have seen Swell Skin at Sprouts or online while searching for new skincare products to try. Sea Buckthorn is a repeated ingredient in this skincare line, and I love to see it. It is one of those ingredients that isn’t talked about enough. There are so many ways you can use Sea Buckthorn, but today we are focusing on skincare. I have 4 great skincare products to share with you, so let’s get into it!
Sea Buckthorn
Sea Buckthorn can be found on the sand dunes on the eastern and southeastern coasts of Great Britain, but it can also be found in parts of Asia and Canada as well. It’s leaves, flowers, seeds and fruits are used in medicine, teas and topical applications like skincare. Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and Vitamin C are all in Sea Buckthorn along with other active ingredients. This plant has been used to treat acne, wrinkles, burns, high blood pressure, and even indigestion. However, some people have experienced itching or redness when using Sea Buckthorn, so like with any other beauty product, please do a patch test first.
An interesting fact about Sea Buckthorn is that in ancient times, it was fed to horses to stabilize weight gain and to get a shiny, healthy coat. This is where it gets its scientific name ” Hippophae” derived from the word “Hippo” meaning horse and “phaos” meaning shinning, in Greek.
Bare Face Facial Radiance Bar- Sea Buckthorn Oil Cleanser
Step 1 to your luxurious skincare routine is the Bare Face Facial Radiance Bar- Sea Buckthorn Oil Cleanser. I like to get the facial bar slightly wet and take a facial brush to the outside of the bar. You can see in the photo provided that I use a small, golden bowl with water and stir the facial brush in the bowl This causes the cleanser from the brush and water in the bowl to become a luxurious lather that your can put on your face. This also keeps your facial bar from getting too wet and dissolving too quickly. After applying the cleanser to your face with the brush, massage your face, neck, and décolleté for at least a minute before rinsing with warm water.
What it Does
This bar is designed to help with acne, redness, inflammation, uneven skin tone, and to help remove your makeup while also hydrating your skin.
Key Ingredients
Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is a very hydrating ingredient, but it is also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.
Sunflower Seed Oil
Sunflower Seed Oil is great for protecting your skin’s barrier and helps with cellular renewal, which is great for anti-aging.
Palm Kernel Acid
Palm Kernel Acid softens skin, restores elasticity, and is very hydrating for your skin.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is famous for its amazing benefits for the skin. Some notable properties are preventing cellular damage from sunburns and epidermal protection from outside stressors like pollution. The foods in this picture are also a great way to get amazing skin by adding them to your diet.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a very calming ingredient and helps take the redness out of the skin, whether it be a sunburn or acne. It also has wound healing properties which makes it a great team player to help treat acne.
Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract
Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract is a well-known Chinese ingredient that has shown great anti-aging results. It has antioxidants and it’s also anti-inflammatory.
How to Care for Your Cleansing Bar
The best way to keep your cleansing bar clean and lasting longer, is to keep it safe in either a covered soap dish or at the very least, out of the bath or shower. If it is exposed to too much heat and water, it could compromise the bar and melt it to an extent depending on the length of time you’ve left it.
Tight & Toned Radiant Pore Exfoliating Toner
Step 2 in your skincare routine is using the Tight and Toned Radiant Pore Exfoliating Toner. In this skincare routine this would be your exfoliator. I really like that it has calming ingredients such as green tea, aloe, and chamomile.
What it Does
This toner balances the pH levels in your skin without using harsh chemicals. It also helps remove dead skin cells with 70% botanical extracts. It helps minimize the appearance of your pores and preps your skin for a smooth makeup application. Toner is also an important prep step for the remaining products left in your routine. Toner prepares your pores for the absorption of your serum, oil or moisturizer.
Key Ingredients
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic Acid comes from sugar cane and is a gentle enough exfoliant that most skin types can handle it.
If you would like to check out another blog post of mine that mentions Glycolic Acid as well as Vitamin C, you can check that out here.
Chamomile
Chamomile has flavonoids and essential oils that penetrate the skin’s surface. These have anti-inflammatory properties that help with redness and swelling on the skin.
Green Tea
Green Tea is rich in antioxidants and is great for calming your skin. When taken as a supplement, it has shown great results in helping to produce collagen.
Olive Leaf Extract
Olive Leaf Extract is great to speed up the process of healing wounds. This ingredient is great for acne-prone skin!
Bilberry Fruit Extract
Bilberry Fruit Extract is a cousin to the Blueberry, although it does not have the same properties. These are typically hand-picked berries and take a lot of hard work to collect. It has calming properties that help with redness in the skin and help protect against UVA light.
Sugar Maple Extract
Sugar Maple Extract has similar properties as honey. It’s great for inflammation, redness, blemishes, and dry skin.
Orange & Lemon Extracts
Orange and Lemon Extracts are often used to brighten the skin and help with sun damage, anti-aging, and pigmentation.
Hydrate & Radiate Hyaluronic Acid Prevent & Protect Serum
Step 3 in this skincare routine is the Hydrate & Radiate Hyaluronic Acid Prevent & Protect Serum. This serum protects your skin from signs of damage from the sun, chlorine, and free radicals. It also helps reduce puffy eyes and keeps your skin looking soft and supple.
What it Does
This serum looks like a lighter version of a moisturizer. The layers of skincare applied area from thinnest to thickest. In this case, this serum would be third in line. This serum will help keep your skin hydrated all day. This product shares a lot of the same ingredients as the last products I listed. I will feature some key ingredients below that we haven’t gone over yet that are also in this serum.
Key Ingredients
Shea Butter
Shea Butter has similar properties to Coconut Oil. Both in texture and in use. Firstly, it hydrates your skin and prevents cell damage. Next, it has Vitamin A which is an excellent anti-aging ingredient. It also improves and calms down eczema. If you have some patches of eczema on your face, this serum may come in handy for dry and red patches.
Lavender
Lavender has anti-fungal properties and reduces eczema. Not only does it calm eczema down, but it also calms down acne and rosacea. I have seen this personally on my own clients in the past.
Radish Root Extract
Radish Root Extract has been seen in wild forms of the plant around in Southeast Asia. This may be a sign that they first grew there, but the Greeks and Romans were using them by the third century B.C. It’s believed radishes were brought to America in the 1600s. Eating radishes will give you a glow from the inside out, giving you healthy looking skin.
Honeysuckle
Honeysuckle has anti-inflammatory properties, is antimicrobial, and helps speed up wound healing.
One & Done Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil Moisturizer
Step 4 in this skincare routine is done with the One & Done Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil Moisturizer. For some people, this may be enough moisture for your skin. Other people may need more hydration and need to do step 4 as well. This oil helps improve the appearance of fine lines, brightens your skin, and leaves it looking and feeling hydrated.
What it Does
Because this product is an oil, it is slightly thicker than a water-based skincare product. It will still act super absorbent. You will want to make sure to let the product sit on your skin before applying your makeup.
Key Ingredients
Sea Buckthorn
Sea Buckthorn is rich in 190 bioactive compounds including fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and E. This oil is one ingredient only!
Witchy Tip
Sea Buckthorn has spiritual ties to protection, exorcism, wishes, success, legal matters, strength, & tenacity. There is a ritual where you can break off a branch from a Sea Buckthorn tree and cleanse yourself with it for good luck and new beginnings. If you don’t have access to this plant, using a skincare line like Swell Skin, makes the ritual very easy to do. Just do your skincare routine as usual and set your intentions before during and after your routine. This way the tree keeps its fruit and branches and your ritual is easily done with no harm.
My Final Thoughts
Using Sea Buckthorn is a no-brainer in your skincare routine. Swell Skin makes it very easy to pick products that will help you with any issues you have with your skin. In this picture is everything I used for my “at home” routine. The plastic water beaker can be purchased online and is something I use to carefully add water to product.
The fan brush and gold bowl are items I have from my facial business, but I am sure you could find something similar on Amazon. The pink microfiber towel square is from MakeUp Eraser and I used it to remove the cleanser from my face.
