What is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol comes from a plant in India called, Psoralea Corylifolia, nicknamed “babchi”. Its Sanskrit name is Bakuchi, which gives us its name today, Bakuchiol. A staple ingredient in the Ayurvedic practice in India as well as China. It was first isolated in 1966 and in 1973 it was studied more in depth. In 2007 that it was brought into the beauty world under the name Sytenol A.
Although Bakuchiol does not have a chemical structure that is even slightly similar to Retinol, it is comparable in the results.
What Is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is an extract derived from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant, which has been used in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines for hundreds of years to help heal, calm and soothe the skin, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. What makes bakuchiol so exciting in the skin care industry, is that it mimics conventional retinol in a number of ways.
A quick refresher: Conventional retinol is a form of vitamin A with many applications in skin care. It helps unclog pores, exfoliates skin and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and give skin a fresh, plump appearance, among many other benefits. It’s a powerful and effective ingredient. Unfortunately, it can be harsh on the skin.
Side effects like peeling, redness, itching, burning, and dry skin are common. While many of these uncomfortable issues are temporary, those with sensitive skin should stay away. Conventional retinol also makes skin super photosensitive. This means that not only should it be used exclusively at night; any sun exposure after retinol application can cause burns and other skin irritation.
This is why bakuchiol is such a game-changer. This retinol alternative includes all the benefits of conventional retinol (minimizing pores and inflammation, increased collagen production, exfoliation, improved appearance of lines and wrinkles) without the negative side effects. Additionally, this plant extract reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, refines skin texture and evens out skin tone. It does this in a gentle yet effective way and it can be used day and night. Using this method makes the process easier without the peeling and redness associated with conventional retinol.
What Does Bakuchiol do for Your Skin?
Bakuchiol helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to build collagen. This is great for those who have acne scars. Your skin will be less photosensitive than the effects of retinol, however, you should still be wearing SPF every day. Your skin will also appear to look tighter and plumper as a side effect of the collagen building up. I love that for you.
How Should I Be Using Bakuchiol?
Most products on the market that have Bakuchiol, will have an average of 0.5%. This being said, they can also go all the way up to 2%. When adding this to your skincare routine, you will want to look at the other products you are using. Line up your AM and PM products so you can see what you have. How many are exfoliating products? AHAs or BHAs still count as an exfoliating ingredient. When adding Bakuchiol, you must treat it like your exfoliator. Depending on the product that has the Bakuchiol in it, this will tell you in what order the Bakuchiol should go in your routine.
Pro Tip:
Do not use Glycolic Acid when using Bakuchiol. If you are putting on your Bakuchiol serum and then a moisturizer with Glycolic Acid in it, the Glycolic Acid will be less effective because these ingredients do not get along! The better choice is to pair it with a moisturizer that has Hyaluronic Acid. This not only enhances the moisture going into your skin but it also boosts the effect of the Bakuchiol.
Product Recommendation
Featured in this blog post is the Bakuchiol Booster Serum from OYU Cosmetics. They gifted me this serum to try for my honest review. The serum was very easy to apply and absorbed into my skin pretty quickly. The smell reflects the ingredients inside. There is no heavy perfume trying to mask the smell, it just smells like the ingredients inside of it. Not harsh, but not my favorite smell either. It disappears the moment you put it on your skin.
How to Use It
I put a few drops onto the palm of my hand and then pressed the serum into my face, neck, and décolleté. Adding a new skincare product to your skin will take some patience. I felt my skin become softer and smoother about 3/4ths of the way into the bottle.
With most skincare products you want to give the whole product a chance and use it as directed.
Witchy Tip
I want to stay on theme here with being gentle to yourself. Let’s say some affirmations while putting our serum on.
- I am worthy of good things
- I am a kind human
- I am capable of so much
- I am magical
Any of those affirmations are a great way to give yourself a “pep talk”. If you have any favorites you would like to share, let our community know and share them in the comments.
Add This Serum to a Routine
Ultimate Cleansing Oil
Apply 3-4 drops of oil onto your dry skin and work the product over your face and neck for a minute or two. This will help to get the makeup, dirt, and oil out of your pores.
Oil cleansers are great for getting off your makeup. If you need some extra help removing your makeup, I like using MakeUp Eraser. They are eco-friendly and anti-microbial. You can use them for the whole week before washing them! They also have fun designs on them and they come in different sizes so you can use them for different things. Hydrating Lip & Eye
The Hydrating Lip and Eye Oil is very gentle for taking makeup off your face without any alcohol to dry your skin out. It contains linoleum acid and antioxidants, which leave your skin looking radiant and healthy. Use 2-4 drops of oil on a cotton swab or a MakeUp Eraser cloth.
The Coffee Eye Oil is powered by green coffee beans and rice bran oil. Put 1-2 drops on a q-tip or MakeUp Eraser cloth and gently place the cloth over your eyes and let the oil sit for a little bit. When you are ready to remove your makeup, gently remover your makeup with the cloth.

My Final Thoughts
This is a very gentle serum for anyone to try, especially beginners. This serum also has enough of a slip to it that you could gently do a little gua sha massage with a stone or your fingers. This serum is vegan, cruelty-free, and has all organic ingredients.
This was my first time trying Bakuchiol in a skincare product and it was as gentle as they claim it is. No peeling on my skin, no sensitivity, and no redness. I would definitely recommend OYU Cosmetic’s Bakuchiol Booster Serum for a beginner adding this to your skincare.
